The Carer

Alan Hopgood Alan Hopgood
starring in his much-loved play, The Carer.

George Parker's wife has recently died from Alzheimer's. He has taken early retirement to care for her and we now see him adjust to a new life.
The play is touching, funny and true.
Charles"Bud" Tingwell originally created the role of George and toured Australia, giving 260 memorable performances. The play also toured New Zealand with Ray Henwood in 2005 and had a short season in Washington DC in 2007. In 2008, Alan took over the role and performed a new and revised version at Chapel Off Chapel, the 1812 Theatre, the Jute Theatre in Cairns, Upwey, the Kingston Arts Centre and the Devonport Performing Arts Centre.

While this is a one-man monologue, in performance, it moved into another dimension with many characters all of whom were brought to life by a consummate actor with a wealth of experience....now, theatre-goers are fortunate enough to see playwright, actor and director on tour in one package. - Hazel Menehira (Arts Nexus)

The Carer has dark subject matter, which could easily engulf the performance and make the play depressing, but the style is light and Hopgood delivered with a brilliant balance of angst and mirth......The Carer is an intelligent piece of theatre from a talented performer that highlights issues in family life relevant to today's audience. - Denise Carter (Cairns Post)

The Carer has particular appeal for the 50+ age group, especially carers but younger people have appreciated a comedy about a serious subject that will touch everyone some day.
Both performances of Charles "Bud" Tingwell and Alan Hopgood are available on video, each for $29 (incl. GST and postage) from Bay Street Productions.
